Historic Downtown, Provo, Utah
Historic Center Street
Utah Valley's Original "Main Street"
Provo's Center Street was formed in 1949 when Brigham Young designated that a center block for the city should be created at the site of Provo’s current Pioneer Park at 500 West and Center Street. Space was set aside on this block for a tabernacle and school buildings, and the streets emanating from this center defined the city. Provo’s original Main Street was what is now Fifth West. Center Street has remained the same from the beginning. For a great historical summary of Provo Center Street see this blog written by Chad Farnes. |
Provo City Center Temple
An LDS Tabernacle Turned Temple
In 1867, the first tabernacle was dedicated (it stood just north of the current tabernacle and has since been demolished). Because this building quickly became too small for the amount of use it was receiving, a new tabernacle, which still stands, was completed and dedicated in 1885. A lighting technician who mistakenly set a 300-watt light fixture on a wooden speaker box in the attic caused the fire that destroyed the Provo Tabernacle in December 2010. In 2016, the original tabernacle was dedicated as the Provo City Center Temple. |

NuSkin Campus, Provo
NU SKIN INNOVATION CENTER AND CAMPUS
The design for the Nu Skin Innovation Center and Campus unifies new and existing buildings within the heart of downtown Provo and establishes a strong center for the daily activities of the Nu Skin community. Connecting into the existing city fabric and improving frontage along Provo’s Center Street, the Innovation Center adds energy to downtown Provo. A proposed entry and sidewalk design welcome Nu Skin visitors while still providing continuity with the historic streetscape. Additional streetscape design integrates and refines streets through and around the campus to establish an inviting and high-quality environment for pedestrians. A central lawn and garden serve as the heart of the Nu Skin Campus. The design includes a shaded ‘porch,’ garden edges, water features, and a sculpted landform to create a range of conditions for gathering and working at multiple scales throughout the year. This space will serve a range of daily activities and will also host larger community events. NuSkin |
