The Echo Theater has got to be the most under-appreciated venue in town. I tend to be critical of community theater, and with its visibly low-budget atmosphere, the Echo doesn't inspire much confidence on first impression. But there is so much talent in their shows that it's impossible not to be impressed.

Local Talent

Community Theater at its Best
I'm studying Shakespeare at BYU, so when I heard that the Echo was putting on Twelfth Night, one of the bard's more underrated plays, I decided to take my wife and make a Valentine's Day date out of it. We weren't expecting much, but we ended up floored by the outright quality of the performance. Quality! Despite the budget limitations of the set and costumes, the cast's acting talent and attention to detail made the play enjoyable for everyone in attendance, from Shakespeare buffs to little girls.
Shakespeare himself would have been proud. They were true to his plot, characters and theme, and incorporated elements of genuine Shakespearean theater (like the omnipresence of music and metadramatic irony) but also incorporated some modern elements, a touch of improv comedy and one or two tastefully funny pop culture references. Overall, they were a well oiled machine and I felt that my ticket was worth every penny. Yelp Review
